Privacy Policy
Pursuant to Articles 13 and 14 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR)
Last updated: 30 October 2026
1. Data Controller
The Data Controller is Alessandro Mainini, contactable via email at info@ars-tecnica.com. This website is personal in nature and does not constitute an organised commercial business.
2. What Data I Process, Why, and on What Legal Basis
a) Website Analytics
This website uses Umami Cloud, a web analytics service that does not use cookies and does not create individual visitor profiles. The service processes limited technical information regarding the visit: pages visited, referring site, device type, browser, operating system, and approximate country or geographic region. To determine approximate location, the service may process the visitor's IP address transiently. The data is used solely to generate statistical reports on website traffic; it is not used to identify visitors, is not combined with other datasets, and is never disclosed to third parties for their own purposes.
Purpose: Understanding site usage to improve content.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest of the controller (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Retention: Statistical metrics are stored for 6 months and subsequently deleted automatically by the service.
b) Email Correspondence
If you write to info@ars-tecnica.com, I use your email address and message content solely to handle your enquiry and, where applicable, develop the project you have enquired about together.
Legal basis: Performance of pre-contractual measures taken at your request, and legitimate interest in managing correspondence (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR).
Retention: Messages are kept for 24 months following the last interaction and then erased, unless statutory retention requirements mandate a longer period.
c) Technical Browsing Data Handled by the Hosting Platform
This website is hosted on Google Sites. As with any website, to serve web pages Google may process technical browsing logs (e.g. IP address and browser specifications) in accordance with its own privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy. Such technical data is processed autonomously by Google, which determines purposes and methods independently; I have no access to these raw server logs.
3. Cookies and Similar Technologies
This website does not deploy profiling or tracking cookies, nor does it utilise equivalent tracking tools for advertising or analytics. Only technical instruments strictly necessary for website operation, managed by the hosting infrastructure, may be present. For this reason, no cookie consent banner is displayed.
4. Recipients of Personal Data
Personal data is not disseminated. It may be processed by the following service providers:
Umami Software, Inc. (website analytics), acting as a data processor under Art. 28 GDPR pursuant to the Data Processing Addendum (DPA) incorporated into its terms of service: https://umami.is/dpa. Umami's list of sub-processors is available at https://umami.is/subprocessors. Provider privacy policy: https://umami.is/privacy.
Google (web hosting), as outlined in Section 2.c.
5. International Data Transfers Outside the EU
Visitor analytics data is hosted within the EU region (Frankfurt, Germany) of the Umami Cloud service. Because Umami Software, Inc. is headquartered in the United States and engages US-based sub-processors, processing or technical support operations involving US access cannot be entirely ruled out. Where this occurs, transfers are governed by the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission (Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/914), incorporated into Umami's DPA.
Google, as hosting provider, may also process data outside the EU in accordance with its privacy documentation and the appropriate safeguards set out therein. Further information regarding these safeguards can be requested by emailing info@ars-tecnica.com.
6. Provision of Data
Browsing this website does not require providing personal data. Providing your email address is entirely optional and is only required should you wish to receive a reply.
7. Your Rights
You may request access to, rectification of, erasure of, restriction of processing, and data portability regarding your personal data at any time by writing to info@ars-tecnica.com. You also have the right to object to processing grounded in legitimate interest. Requests will receive a response within one month.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority: in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali (www.garanteprivacy.it).
8. Automated Decision-Making
No automated decision-making processes or profiling activities are carried out.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
This policy may be updated periodically, for instance if tools used across the site change. The version in force is always that published on this page, bearing the latest revision date indicated at the top.
