Projects & Processes: From Concept to the ARS-TECNICA Workbench

These pages bring together the projects developed in the ARS-TECNICA workshop: neither mass production nor a commercial catalogue, but a practical log of hours spent across CAD design, workshop trials, and hand-finishing at the bench. Each piece is created to answer a specific requirement or test a technical solution, verifying the hold of an interlocking joint, dialing in mating tolerances, or experimenting with honest materials such as birch plywood, technical ply, metal hardware, and everyday timber.

Machinery, Tolerances, and Handcraft

The fabrication process develops through three complementary approaches, where computer numerical control consistently engages with hand tool work:

Digital Fabrication: CNC Milling

Milling begins with CAD/CAM modelling and careful calibration of toolpaths. Using a Genmitsu 4040-PRO MAX, mechanical components, technical jigs, stands, and workshop enclosures take shape by clearing material a tenth of a millimetre at a time. Whether working with technical plywood or solid timber, the goal is always clean pockets, accurate shoulders, and surfaces built to withstand daily workshop use.

Digital Fabrication: Laser Cutting & Engraving

The laser serves as the instrument for translating 2D geometries and vector files into high-definition physical parts. Using an xTool S1—alternating between a 40W diode module for clean wood cuts and a 2W infrared head for precision metal marking—the process demands precise kerf compensation and power management to produce tight, solid joints without excessive charring.

Hand Assembly and Tool Restoration

Alongside digital fabrication stands the traditional workbench. It is used to hand-finish and fit machine-cut components, as well as to bring old workshop tools, measuring instruments, and vintage timepieces back into service. Rather than cosmetic restoration for its own sake, this is deliberate mechanical revival: stripping down, understanding the original design logic, cleaning, and recommissioning while respecting the patina of age.

Bespoke Builds from a Design or Functional Requirement

The projects documented below represent workshop prototypes and tested solutions. The same workflow—from vector artwork to the finished piece—adapts readily to different designs.
